Why Choose Natural Baby Products?

Becoming a parent for the first time is one of life’s great joys. A tiny, beautiful baby is suddenly and completely dependent on you. It’s an exciting and exhausting time and the learning curve is steep as you find your own rhythm as a mum.

With new parenthood comes many choices, all of them made by YOU. It can be overwhelming! Will you co-sleep? Should you use a dummy? And is choosing natural baby products really that important? They’re excellent questions and while we think the first two really come down to what works for your family, read on to discover why natural baby skin care is more than just a trend.

Fragile New Skin

In utero, a baby’s skin is covered in a thick, white coating called vernix which helps protect from infection. However, once born, skin is at its most vulnerable as the immune system is only just developing. This makes your baby’s skin especially sensitive, and it’s not uncommon for them to develop rashes, irritation and dry patches when exposed to chemicals, synthetic fragrances or harsh detergents.

Avoiding Questionable Ingredients

The skin is the body’s largest organ and can absorb anything that is applied topically. Most chemicals will penetrate the skin on a very superficial level, but many chemical molecules are simply too big to be fully absorbed into the bloodstream.

But how do you know which ones are okay and which ones aren’t? It can be confusing to read through the literature available and even more confusing when there is disagreement between experts about whether a chemical is safe or not.

Choosing natural baby skin care made without ingredients that have a question mark over their safety is a good place to start. In particular, parabens, petrochemicals, sulphates (SLS), mineral oils, synthetic colours and fragrances should be avoided due to evidence that they can cause skin irritation and sensitivities. Natural baby wash products and skin lotions are also a better alternative for those who want to lower exposure to possible toxins.

Risk vs Benefit

There are times in life when the benefit of exposure to a questionable ingredient outweighs the risk. For instance, with a life-saving medicine.

But with baby wash products and nappy creams, there is simply no need to use any ingredient that is harsh or potentially irritating. Your precious little bubba’s skin requires only the gentlest of cleansing to keep it perfectly cared for. It’s important not to strip the natural oils that help keep delicate skin soft and healthy, so less is more.

And remember that the length of exposure to a product increases the likelihood of skin absorption. Anything you soak baby in (like a bath wash) – or apply directly to their skin (like a lotion) should be the most pure and mild formulation.

Safe, Soothing, Natural Baby Skin Care

Everyone’s skin is different and individual sensitivities will always exist. But naturally sourced ingredients like Aloe vera, shea butter, sweet almond oil and calendula have been used for centuries to care for skin and offer a nourishing and soothing alternative to synthetic ingredients formulated in a lab.

And when we’re talking about scrumptious baby skin, it just makes sense to use natural, skin-loving ingredients that are safe and gentle enough to be used every day.
