Don’t believe everything you hear
Heard the saying “don’t believe everything you read in the papers”? It’s true for newborns too! Everyone is going to try and tell you “the best way” to do something or “how it was in my day”, but bare in mind that not everyone is right and you don’t have to follow all the advice you’re given. Now, we’re not saying to completely throw the rule book out of the window here, but do take what you hear with a pinch of salt and do what works best for you and bub!

Power naps will save your life
When bub has his/her midday nap you’ll be tempted to get cracking on those household chores or dash about doing errands – but don’t forget to look after yourself as much as you look after your little one, always remember: happy mumma = happy bubba! Having a quick ten minutes of sleep while your newborn sleeps will give you a big burst of energy to take on the rest of the day.

Get out of the house
A lot of new mums get a case of cabin fever in the first few weeks. Don’t let yourself get down, take advantage of all the baby-friendly activities there are around these days! Get out of the house, even if it’s just to go for a walk or to grab a coffee at the local cafe. Ten minutes of fresh air will clear your mind and give you a fresh outlook on the day. Check out our exercise tips here.

Appreciate your bubba
You’ll always hear Mum’s saying, “they grow up so fast,” and while you’re 7-day sleep deprived and on your last legs you might feel like these new born weeks will last a lifetime, but don’t take them for granted! As tired and run down as you may be, appreciate your little tiny bub as much as you can while they’re still super small and adorable – before you know it they’ll be in their terrible two’s and you’ll be begging to go back.

Hire some help
Having a house cleaner might seem like a luxury, but having a helping hand around in the first few months will be a life saver! You don’t need to splash the cash on a fancy professional, even so much as a local teenager or family member wanting some extra pocket money will be a big help.

Don’t turn down favours
If someone asks how they can help you out, don’t let your pride get in the way, take them up on the offer! One thing we’ve found to be a big help in the early days is having family and friends help with meals. You’ll be so busy with little bub that you wont have the time to take care of yourselves so having a friend drop over some dinner will be a winner.

Remember you’re doing your best
When it comes to parenting, most of the time there is no right or wrong way to do something. As prepared as you might want to be, everyday will be different and you will have to learn as you go along. Trust your instincts and enjoy the journey, everything is going to turn out okay, you just have to believe you can do it!
